The Tampa Bay Rays compete in the American League East, one of baseball's most demanding divisions. Founded in 1998 as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the franchise spent its first decade finding its footing before a rebrand and roster overhaul transformed the organization into a consistent postseason contender. The Rays play their home games at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the domed stadium creates a controlled, high-energy atmosphere that amplifies crowd noise in a way open-air parks rarely match.
The franchise earned its first winning season and first American League pennant in 2008, capping a worst-to-first turnaround that saw the team go from the league's worst record to the World Series in a single year. That run featured Evan Longoria, who went on to become the franchise's all-time leader in games played, home runs, RBIs, and WAR. David Price won the franchise's first Cy Young Award in 2012, and Blake Snell took the second in 2018 after leading the American League in wins (21) and ERA (1.89). The Rays also pioneered the "opener" pitching strategy in 2018, a move that reshaped how teams across baseball manage their pitching staffs.
Rays fans bring a distinct identity to Tropicana Field. The cowbell, inspired by the famous Saturday Night Live sketch and introduced by former owner Stuart Sternberg, has become a signature of home games. Fans ring cowbells when opposing batters reach two-strike counts, when visiting fans try to start chants, and after big plays. The team's two mascots, Raymond (a "seadog" who has been with the franchise since 1998) and DJ Kitty (introduced in 2010), add personality to the gameday experience. Under manager Joe Maddon, the team embraced a loose, creative clubhouse culture that produced rally slogans like "9=8" during the 2008 pennant run and the "rayhawk" mohawk tradition that players and coaches adopted during postseason pushes.
