The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a two-time Super Bowl champion franchise based in Tampa, Florida, competing in the NFC South division. Founded in 1974 and playing their first season in 1976, the Bucs endured one of the roughest starts in league history, going winless in their inaugural campaign and starting 0-26 across their first two seasons. But the turnaround came fast. By their fourth season in 1979, Tampa Bay became the first post-merger expansion team to clinch a division title, win a playoff game, and host a conference championship.
The franchise's identity has been built on defense from the very beginning. Lee Roy Selmon, the team's first-ever draft pick in 1976, set the tone as a Hall of Fame defensive end and the 1979 AP Defensive Player of the Year. That defensive tradition deepened in the late 1990s when head coach Tony Dungy and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin developed the "Tampa 2" scheme, a modified Cover 2 defense that became one of the most imitated systems in football. From 1997 to 2008, the Bucs defense finished in the league's top ten every year but one, including eight top-five finishes. The 2002 unit, led by AP Defensive Player of the Year Derrick Brooks, is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenses in NFL history. That squad powered Tampa Bay to a 48-21 rout of the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, setting Super Bowl records with five interceptions and three interception returns for touchdowns.
Tampa Bay captured its second championship in the 2020 season, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV. That win made the Buccaneers the first team in NFL history to play and win a Super Bowl in their home stadium, Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs remain undefeated in Super Bowl appearances at 2-0, a distinction shared only with the Baltimore Ravens among teams with multiple trips. Five players who built their legacies in Tampa Bay have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and all five are defensive players: Lee Roy Selmon, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Ronde Barber.
