System of a Down is an Armenian-American heavy metal band formed in Glendale, California, in 1994. Built from the remnants of an earlier project called Soil, the group fused alternative metal, nu metal, hard rock, and progressive metal with Middle Eastern musical traditions, creating a sound that guitarist Daron Malakian once described as "if Slayer and The Beatles had a baby." All four members are of Armenian descent, and that shared heritage has shaped both the band's identity and their willingness to use their platform for cultural causes.
The band released five studio albums between 1998 and 2005, three of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Their second album, Toxicity, earned 7x Platinum certification in the United States and established them as one of the most commercially successful metal acts of the early 2000s. System of a Down sold over 12 million records worldwide, and their singles "Aerials" and "Hypnotize" both reached number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. In 2005, the back-to-back releases of Mezmerize and Hypnotize made them only the fourth artist in history to land two studio albums at number one in the same calendar year, joining The Beatles, 2Pac, and DMX in that distinction.
After going on hiatus in 2006, the band reunited in 2010 for touring and has continued performing at festivals and headlining shows worldwide. Their live reputation is built on an unpredictable energy that shifts between controlled chaos and tight musicianship, drawing from a catalog that spans thrash-influenced aggression, folk-inflected melodies, and absurdist humor. Producer Rick Rubin, who signed them to American/Columbia Records after seeing early club performances at the Whisky a Go Go and Viper Room in Hollywood, recalled: "No one was waiting for an Armenian heavy metal band. It had to be so good that it transcended all of that."
