About Shinedown

Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2001 by lead singer Brent Smith after his previous group dissolved. Still under contract with Atlantic Records, Smith built a new project that became one of the most consistent chart acts in modern rock, with eight studio albums across more than two decades: Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), Threat to Survival (2015), Attention Attention (2018), Planet Zero (2022), and Eight (2026). The band's sound pulls from hard rock, post-grunge, alternative metal, and arena rock, with pop and Southern rock influences mixed in, and they have cited Stone Temple Pilots, Otis Redding, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden as formative influences.

Shinedown built their audience the old way, through relentless touring. The band played over 400 live shows across 2003 and 2004 behind their platinum debut Leave a Whisper, sharing stages with Van Halen, Seether, and 3 Doors Down. In 2005, Save Me became their first single to top Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, holding number one for twelve straight weeks. The breakthrough scaled up in 2008 with The Sound of Madness, which spent 120 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200, earned double platinum certification, and produced Second Chance, a crossover hit that reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold three million units.

No act has dominated Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart like Shinedown. The band holds the record for most number one singles on the chart with 24, more than any other artist, and every single they have released has reached the chart's top five. In 2021, Billboard ranked Shinedown number one on its Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists chart, and the band has sold more than 10 million records worldwide. The road never slowed either, from the Carnival of Madness arena tour they headline to acoustic runs in smaller rooms, and in 2022 the band was inducted into Mohegan Sun's Walk of Fame. For fans weighing Shinedown tickets, that is the story in one line: two decades of roadwork and a catalog built for big rooms.

Who are the members of Shinedown?

The Shinedown lineup solidified in 2008 around two founding members and two additions who have anchored the band for most of its history.
  • Brent Smith: founder, lead vocalist, and the primary songwriter behind the band's catalog since 2001.
  • Barry Kerch: drummer and founding member, behind the kit since the original Jacksonville lineup.
  • Zach Myers: guitar, piano, and backing vocals, a touring member in the mid-2000s who became a permanent member in 2008.
  • Eric Bass: bass, piano, and backing vocals, who joined in 2008 and produced and mixed Attention Attention (2018), the band's first album produced entirely in-house.
Earlier members include original guitarist Jasin Todd, original bassist Brad Stewart, and Nick Perri, a guitarist who toured with the band briefly in 2008.

What are Shinedown's most popular songs?

Second Chance is Shinedown's biggest crossover hit, and the catalog behind it is stacked with rock radio number ones across every album era. The most widely recognized Shinedown songs include:
  • Second Chance, which reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned triple platinum certification
  • Save Me, the first Shinedown single to top the Mainstream Rock chart, which held number one for twelve weeks
  • Devour, Sound of Madness, If You Only Knew, The Crow & the Butterfly, and Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom), a run of rock chart-toppers from The Sound of Madness
  • Bully and Unity from Amaryllis, plus Cut the Cord, State of My Head, and How Did You Love from Threat to Survival, all Mainstream Rock number ones
  • Devil, Get Up, and Monsters from Attention Attention, along with Planet Zero, Daylight, and A Symptom of Being Human from Planet Zero
  • Simple Man, the Lynyrd Skynyrd cover that became a fan favorite from the Leave a Whisper era
  • Dance, Kid, Dance and Searchlight from the Eight era, with Searchlight giving the band its first appearance on Billboard's Country Airplay chart in 2026

What awards has Shinedown won?

Shinedown's biggest wins have come at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, where the band took Rock Artist of the Year in 2025 and repeated the win in 2026, and where A Symptom of Being Human earned Rock Song of the Year in 2025. The wider accolades include:
  • Billboard honors: ranked number one on the Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists chart in 2021, alongside the record for most Mainstream Rock number one singles.
  • RIAA certifications: double platinum for The Sound of Madness, platinum for Leave a Whisper and Us and Them, and triple platinum for the single Second Chance.
  • Award nominations: recognition at the American Music Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, and the Kerrang! Awards.

What is Shinedown's fan culture like?

Shinedown has always leaned into formats that shrink the distance between the band and the crowd. In 2013, Brent Smith and Zach Myers recorded ten acoustic cover songs selected from more than 4,000 fan requests, ranging from Metallica's Nothing Else Matters to Adele's Someone Like You, and released them as the Acoustic Sessions EPs. The Anything and Everything tour flipped the arena script, placing the band in smaller venues for acoustic sets and open question-and-answer sessions with the audience. The Carnival of Madness tour, which Shinedown headlines, became a recurring summer institution at 10,000-capacity arenas, with lineups over the years that have included Halestorm and Papa Roach. Even release strategy skewed fan-first: when vinyl production delays threatened the Planet Zero rollout in 2022, the band pushed the album back so the entire fanbase could experience it across every format at once.
