Rod Wave, born Rodarius Marcell Green in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1998, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter recognized as a pioneer of "trap-soul," a sound built where hip hop, R&B, soul, and trap meet. Singing came first: he was selected for the All-State Elementary Chorus in 2009 and 2010, and as a teenager he started recording with a microphone his father bought him and a computer from his brother. He began releasing music in 2015 with the Rookie of the Year mixtape and his Hunger Games mixtape series, then signed with Alamo Records in 2018.
The breakthrough came in 2019, when "Heart on Ice" went viral on TikTok and YouTube and climbed to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. That single set up his debut album, Ghetto Gospel (2019), executive produced by Kevin Gates, which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200. He followed with Pray 4 Love (2020), a number 2 debut powered by "Rags2Riches," which reached number 12 on the Hot 100 behind its remix featuring Lil Baby. That same year, XXL named him to its 2020 Freshman Class, and Audiomack picked him as the first artist in its "Up Now" emerging artist program.
From there he assembled one of the most consistent chart runs in modern music. SoulFly (2021), Beautiful Mind (2022), and Nostalgia (2023) each debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned double platinum certifications from the RIAA, while "Street Runner" and "Tombstone" both landed in the top 20 of the Hot 100. Last Lap (2024) debuted at number 2, his seventh consecutive top ten album, making him the only artist other than Taylor Swift to place a top ten album every year from 2019 to 2024, and Don't Look Down (2026) delivered his fourth chart-topper. Along the way he has sold 105.5 million digital copies in the United States, placing him among the country's highest-certified artists, and became the twenty-fourth artist to chart one hundred songs on the Hot 100.
