About Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder trace their roots to the 1967 founding of the Seattle SuperSonics, the franchise's name for 41 seasons before the 2008 move to Oklahoma City. As the only team in the major professional North American sports leagues based in the state of Oklahoma, the Thunder are woven into the fabric of their city, and the 2025 NBA championship, the franchise's first since the move and second overall, stands as the defining moment of the Oklahoma City era.

The Seattle years established the franchise as a winner, with 22 playoff berths, three NBA Finals appearances, and the 1979 championship. The early Oklahoma City chapters belonged to a young core of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Serge Ibaka, who lifted the Thunder to their first Oklahoma City division title in 2010-11 and the Western Conference championship in 2011-12, when the team reached the NBA Finals for the fourth time in franchise history before falling to the Miami Heat in five games.

A patient rebuild followed, and it produced the core behind the next contender. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander arrived from the LA Clippers in a 2019 trade, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams joined via the 2022 draft, and the roster jelled quickly: 57 wins and the top seed in the Western Conference in 2023-24, when Oklahoma City became the youngest team to win an NBA playoff series at an average age of 25. The next season delivered the payoff, a franchise-record 68 wins and the league's best record capped by a seven-game NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers, with Gilgeous-Alexander earning Finals MVP.

Oklahoma City Thunder tickets put you inside Paycom Center, an 18,203-seat arena in downtown Oklahoma City that opened in 2002 and has hosted the team since the inaugural 2008-09 season, first as the Ford Center and later as Chesapeake Energy Arena. The building has staged NBA Finals games in 2012 and 2025, and the atmosphere on a big night reflects a city whose NBA team is its only major-league show in town.

Who are the most notable players in Oklahoma City Thunder history?

Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander top the list of the most notable players in Oklahoma City Thunder history, with key contributors from every era of the franchise close behind.
  • Kevin Durant: drafted by the franchise in 2007 during its final Seattle season, he became the youngest scoring champion in NBA history in 2009-10 and won the 2014 NBA MVP in Oklahoma City.
  • Russell Westbrook: the fourth overall pick in 2008, he won the 2017 NBA MVP, captured two scoring titles, and shares the franchise single-game scoring record with a 58-point game in 2017.
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: acquired in the 2019 trade with the LA Clippers, he won back-to-back NBA MVP awards in 2025 and 2026 and was named Finals MVP during the 2025 championship run.
  • James Harden and Serge Ibaka: cornerstones of the 2012 Finals team, with Harden winning Sixth Man of the Year in 2012.
  • Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams: the 2022 draft picks who grew into All-Stars alongside Gilgeous-Alexander during the title era.
The franchise has also retired seven numbers honoring players from both the Seattle and Oklahoma City eras, including Jack Sikma's 43, Lenny Wilkens' 19, and Nick Collison's 4.

How many NBA championships have the Oklahoma City Thunder won?

The Oklahoma City Thunder franchise has won two NBA championships: the 1979 title as the Seattle SuperSonics and the 2025 title in Oklahoma City. The 2025 championship run was dominant, with a franchise-record 68 wins and the league's best record in the regular season before a seven-game NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned Finals MVP honors. The franchise also claims five Western Conference championships (1978, 1979, 1996, 2012, and 2025) and 14 division titles, and its 2012 NBA Finals appearance ended in a five-game loss to the Miami Heat.

Who is the biggest rival of the Oklahoma City Thunder?

The San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks are the biggest rivals of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and both series are built on high-stakes playoff history. The Spurs and Thunder met three times in the playoffs during the 2010s, including two Western Conference Finals, with Oklahoma City taking two of the three series, and the matchup stayed prominent into the 2020s with another conference finals meeting in 2026. The Mavericks chapter began in the 2011 Western Conference Finals, when Dallas eliminated the Thunder on its way to a championship, and flipped a season later when Oklahoma City swept the Mavericks out of the first round of the 2012 playoffs. Games against both franchises rank among the most anticipated dates on the Thunder home schedule, and tickets for those matchups are consistently in demand.

What awards have Oklahoma City Thunder players and coaches won?

Oklahoma City Thunder players have won four NBA MVP awards, all of them claimed during the Oklahoma City era, and the franchise's honors run far deeper than that.
  • NBA MVP: Kevin Durant (2014), Russell Westbrook (2017), and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2025 and 2026).
  • Finals and conference finals MVP: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander swept both awards in 2025.
  • Scoring champions: Kevin Durant (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014), Russell Westbrook (2015 and 2017), and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2025).
  • Coaching and front office: Scott Brooks (Coach of the Year, 2010), Mark Daigneault (Coach of the Year, 2024), and Sam Presti (Executive of the Year, 2025).
  • More honors: James Harden (Sixth Man of the Year, 2012) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Clutch Player of the Year, 2026).

What is fan culture like at an Oklahoma City Thunder game?

Oklahoma City Thunder fans rank among the most devoted in the NBA, and the reason is structural: the franchise is the only major professional sports team in the state of Oklahoma, so home games double as statewide events. The numbers back it up. The Thunder filled 98.9 percent of available seats and sold out 28 of 41 home games in 2009-10, and during the 2012 NBA Finals fans arrived roughly 45 minutes before tipoff to applaud pregame warmups. The "Thunder Up" slogan, prominent on T-shirts during that playoff run, became a permanent part of the team's identity, and Rumble the Bison, the mascot who debuted in 2009 and won NBA Mascot of the Year that season, keeps the building loud on every break in the action.
