About Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is a comedy play written and originally performed by Cole Escola that reimagines the final days of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln. Set in the White House in April 1865, the play recasts the First Lady as a frustrated cabaret performer trapped in a loveless marriage with the President. The show premiered Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on February 8, 2024, and transferred to Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, 2024, directed by Sam Pinkleton. Critical reception placed it among the most acclaimed comedies in recent Broadway history, with Time Out New York awarding it five stars and The New York Times calling it "silly, nasty, tasteless and, in the end, good theater."

The Broadway production extended its run multiple times due to sustained demand, and a rotating cast of high-profile performers have stepped into the title role. Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, Jane Krakowski, Maya Rudolph, and Bowen Yang have all taken on Mary Todd Lincoln, each bringing a distinct comedic sensibility to the role. The West End production opened at the Trafalgar Theatre in London in December 2025, and a U.S. national tour launched in late 2026 with stops in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C.

What is Oh, Mary! about?

Critics have praised Oh, Mary! for finding genuine emotional depth beneath its outrageous comedy.

The rotating cast of guest performers in the title role gives each run a distinct flavor, and fans frequently return to see how different actors interpret Mary Todd Lincoln. The production draws a crowd that skews enthusiastic and vocal, with the kind of communal energy that makes live comedy hit differently than a recorded performance.
