Noah Kahan never left Vermont behind. The singer-songwriter was born on January 1, 1997, and grew up on a tree farm in Strafford, Vermont, a childhood that runs straight through his songwriting. He wrote his first songs at age 8 and picked up his first guitar at 10, then spent his teens uploading originals to SoundCloud and YouTube until his online following turned into a deal with Republic Records in 2017. That same year, at 19, he toured for the first time as an opening act for the German rock band Milky Chance. His influences run from Paul Simon and Cat Stevens to Hozier, Mumford & Sons, and Green Day, a folk-rooted, pop-minded lineage that carries through every era of his catalog.
The breakthrough arrived in stages. His 2019 debut album, Busyhead, carried "Hurt Somebody" with Julia Michaels, a single certified gold in the United States and his first entry on a Billboard chart. He returned home to Vermont in 2020 and wrote the Cape Elizabeth EP in a single week, then released his second album, I Was / I Am, in 2021. Then everything changed with "Stick Season." Kahan started teasing the song on TikTok in October 2020, and two straight years of viral anticipation built up before its full release in July 2022. When the 14-track album Stick Season arrived that October, produced by Gabe Simon, it debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200, his first appearance on the chart, and turned the Vermont songwriter into one of folk music's biggest breakout stories in years.
Stick Season kept growing from there. The 2023 deluxe edition, Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever), added seven tracks, and Kahan spent the following year releasing collaborative versions of album songs with a remarkable run of partners: "Dial Drunk" with Post Malone, "Northern Attitude" with Hozier, "She Calls Me Back" with Kacey Musgraves, "Everywhere, Everything" with Gracie Abrams, and "Homesick" with Sam Fender, plus a No. 14 Billboard Hot 100 feature on Zach Bryan's "Sarah's Place." The title track became an international hit in early 2024, topping the UK Singles Chart and Australia's ARIA Chart and climbing to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest chart position of his career.
The recognition followed fast. Kahan earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, released the live album Live From Fenway Park in 2024, played the Glastonbury Festival in 2025, and returned in April 2026 with his fourth album, The Great Divide, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with record-breaking streaming and vinyl sales for a rock album debut and spent three consecutive weeks at the top. The Great Divide Tour that followed marked his first stadium headlining run, taking Noah Kahan tickets into the biggest venues of his career.
