About My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance is an American rock band from New Jersey, formed in 2001 by vocalist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier, with lead guitarist Ray Toro, bassist Mikey Way, and rhythm guitarist Frank Iero rounding out the lineup soon after. They earned a reputation as one of the most influential rock groups of the 2000s by fusing alternative rock, pop-punk, and post-hardcore with a goth-tinged look, theatrical vocals, and lyrics that read like confessions. The band spent years pushing back on the "emo" label even as they became one of the genre's defining acts, and their sound owes as much to Queen's arena-scale ambition and the Misfits' aggression as it does to the Cure's gloom and the New Jersey scene that raised them.

The climb was fast. Debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love landed in 2002 on Eyeball Records, and an early fan base grew around MySpace-era free downloads and relentless New Jersey shows. After signing with Reprise Records in 2003, the band broke through with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004), a platinum seller powered by "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", and "The Ghost of You". Then came the 2006 rock opera The Black Parade, their defining statement, whose lead single "Welcome to the Black Parade" topped the UK Singles Chart and reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (2010) traded funeral marches for a brighter, power-pop-charged sound, and in March 2013 the band announced their breakup, closing the first chapter with the greatest hits collection May Death Never Stop You in 2014.

The reunion era confirmed what the touring history already suggested: demand for My Chemical Romance tickets never faded. They announced their return on Halloween 2019, and the Los Angeles reunion show sold out almost immediately, three Milton Keynes stadium shows sold out within minutes, and a full North American tour sold out in six hours. The Reunion Tour ran from May 2022 at the Eden Project to March 2023 in Tokyo, with the single "The Foundations of Decay" arriving as their first new music in eight years. In 2024 they headlined the When We Were Young Festival with a full performance of The Black Parade, and the Long Live The Black Parade tour launched in 2025 around the same album. Their stagecraft has always leaned theatrical, from the pyrotechnics of the 2007 Black Parade World Tour to main stages shared with Green Day, Linkin Park, and Blink-182. The Black Parade also went on to inspire a generation of 2010s artists, from Twenty One Pilots and Halsey to Billie Eilish and Post Malone.

Who are the members of My Chemical Romance?

My Chemical Romance's current lineup is Gerard Way on lead vocals, Ray Toro on lead guitar, Mikey Way on bass, and Frank Iero on rhythm guitar, with Toro and Iero handling backing vocals. Mikey Way, Gerard's younger brother, named the band after spotting the Irvine Welsh book Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance while working at a bookstore. Iero, previously the frontman of Pencey Prep, joined days before the debut album was recorded. Earlier versions of the band featured drummers Matt Pelissier and Bob Bryar and keyboardist James Dewees. After the 2013 breakup, all four core members stayed active: Gerard Way released the solo album Hesitant Alien in 2014, Iero put out solo records of his own, Mikey Way co-founded Electric Century, and Toro released solo material.

What are My Chemical Romance's most popular songs?

My Chemical Romance's catalog spans four studio albums, and their most recognized songs include:
  • "Welcome to the Black Parade", the UK number-one single from The Black Parade (2006) that also reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100
  • "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", and "The Ghost of You" from the platinum album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004)
  • "Famous Last Words", the second single from The Black Parade
  • "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)", "Sing", and "The Kids from Yesterday" from Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (2010)
  • "The Foundations of Decay", the 2022 single that marked the band's first new music in eight years
Fans of the early era also point to "Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us" from the 2002 debut as a signature track.

What awards has My Chemical Romance won?

My Chemical Romance won Best International Band at the 2007 NME Awards, where Gerard Way also took home Hero of the Year, and the band was nominated for Best Alternative Group at the 2007 American Music Awards. Their critical reputation runs even deeper than the trophy count:
  • Kerrang! ranked The Black Parade the fourth-greatest album of 2006
  • Rolling Stone placed The Black Parade 20th among the best albums of 2006 and number 361 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time
  • Consequence put the band at number 20 on its 2019 list of the 100 best pop-punk bands
  • Kerrang! called them "the rock superstars of the 21st century" in 2020, and Vice named them artist of the decade

What is the My Chemical Romance fanbase like?

My Chemical Romance's fanbase is one of the most devoted in rock, from the MySpace kids who found the band through free downloads in the early 2000s to the crowds that snapped up reunion tickets in minutes. The Guardian once described the band as "unlikely superstars, misfits who inadvertently infiltrated the mainstream", and that outsider streak is what binds the community together. The band has long embraced its LGBT following, with many queer fans describing their shows as the place they first felt seen, and Gerard Way's pale-face, raven-haired look became the visual blueprint for a generation of emo kids. Crowds at My Chemical Romance shows are known for word-for-word singalongs, from the first piano notes of "Welcome to the Black Parade" to the final encore.
