About Muse

Muse formed in Teignmouth, Devon, in 1994, when three schoolfriends turned a local battle-of-the-bands win into a full-time band. The lineup has stayed unchanged ever since: Matt Bellamy on lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Chris Wolstenholme on bass and backing vocals; and Dominic Howard on drums and percussion. Their sound sits at the intersection of alternative rock, progressive rock, and electronic rock, built around Bellamy's falsetto, Wolstenholme's overdriven fuzz bass, and Howard's expansive drumming. That combination has kept Muse tickets in steady demand across three decades of touring.

The band's debut, Showbiz, arrived in 1999, but 2001's Origin of Symmetry is the record that established their reputation for ambitious instrumentation and explosive live shows. Absolution followed in 2003 and became the first of seven consecutive UK number-one albums. Black Holes and Revelations (2006) pulled electronic and pop textures into the mix, while The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) pushed Muse into the top tier of global stadium acts. Drones (2015) topped the Billboard 200 in the US, and Simulation Theory (2018) leaned hard into synthesizers and science-fiction themes. Will of the People (2022) drew on sounds from across their catalog.

Muse's following took shape the old-fashioned way, through years of grassroots gigging before the arenas came, and it has stayed unusually engaged since. The band has handed setlist control to fans for special shows, including a 2018 date in Paris built from an online fan vote, and its live reputation has carried them to headline slots at Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, and Lollapalooza. Wembley Stadium, Madison Square Garden, and Rome's Stadio Olimpico have all hosted the band, and each stop draws a crowd that spans the early Origin of Symmetry era through the newer material.

Who are the members of Muse?

Muse has kept the same three members since forming in 1994. Matt Bellamy is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist, and he writes most of the band's material. Chris Wolstenholme plays bass and sings backing vocals, with overdriven fuzz-bass tones that have become a signature of Muse's sound. Dominic Howard is the drummer and percussionist, anchoring the band's heavier, more theatrical arrangements. All three grew up together in Teignmouth, Devon, and attended the same local school before forming the group.

What are Muse's most popular songs?

Muse's best-known songs span nearly the full length of their catalog, from early singles to stadium anthems.
  • Plug In Baby
  • Feeling Good
  • Time Is Running Out
  • Hysteria
  • Supermassive Black Hole
  • Starlight
  • Knights of Cydonia
  • Uprising
  • Madness

What awards has Muse won?

Muse has collected major awards on both sides of the Atlantic across more than two decades.
  • Grammy Awards: two wins, including Best Rock Album for The Resistance (2011) and Drones (2016)
  • Brit Awards: two wins, including Best British Live Act
  • MTV Europe Music Awards: five wins
  • NME Awards: eight wins
  • Ivor Novello Award: International Achievement, 2012
That run has made Muse one of the most decorated rock bands of its generation, a status reflected in the steady demand for Muse tickets.

What is Muse's fan community like?

Muse built its audience through years of small gigs across Devon, London, and Manchester before graduating to arenas and stadiums, and that grassroots start shaped a base that skews loyal and long-tenured. Followers who trace back to the Origin of Symmetry era still show up alongside newer listeners. The band has returned that engagement by letting fans shape the experience: for a 2018 show at La Cigale in Paris, the setlist was chosen through an online fan vote, and a follow-up London gig leaned on older material and B-sides. Muse's reach now runs global, with tours spanning Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia.
