Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a jukebox musical with a book by John Logan, based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film of the same name. Set in Paris during the Belle Epoque, the show follows Christian, a young composer who falls in love with Satine, a courtesan and star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret. The musical premiered on July 10, 2018, at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston before moving to Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in June 2019. Directed by Alex Timbers with choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the production brings together an inventive jukebox score that weaves dozens of popular songs spanning multiple decades into a single, cohesive theatrical experience.
On Broadway, Moulin Rouge! The Musical ran for 2,297 regular performances before closing in August 2026. The show earned 14 Tony Award nominations and won 10, the most of any production that year, including Best Musical. Beyond Broadway, the production has reached audiences around the world with long runs in London's West End at the Piccadilly Theatre, in Melbourne, in Cologne (where attendance surpassed 1.1 million), in Seoul, Tokyo, Utrecht, and through a North American tour that launched in Chicago in 2022.
