About MJ The Musical

MJ The Musical is a jukebox musical built around the life and music of Michael Jackson, framed through the rehearsals for his 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The show pairs Jackson's catalog with a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. It began previews at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre on December 6, 2021, and opened on February 1, 2022.

The original Broadway production starred Myles Frost as Michael Jackson, a role that helped define the show's run. The staging moves between a tour rehearsal room and flashbacks to Jackson's early years, tracing his rise from the Jackson 5 through the solo albums that made him a global star. Its success carried the musical well beyond Broadway, with a U.S. national tour, a West End engagement at the Prince Edward Theatre, and productions in Hamburg and Australia following the original run.

What songs are in MJ The Musical?

MJ The Musical pulls from across Michael Jackson's catalog, from his Jackson 5 years through his solo records. Featured musical numbers include:
  • Beat It
  • Billie Jean
  • Smooth Criminal
  • Thriller
  • Man in the Mirror
  • Bad
  • Black or White
  • Human Nature
  • Earth Song
  • They Don't Care About Us
  • I Want You Back / ABC / The Love You Save
The original Broadway cast recording, capturing that songbook, was released on July 15, 2022.

What awards has MJ The Musical won?

MJ The Musical earned 10 Tony Award nominations in 2022 and won four, led by Myles Frost's win for Best Actor in a Musical. Its honors also include:
  • Tony Awards (2022): Best Actor in a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design
  • Laurence Olivier Awards (2025): Best Theatre Choreographer for the West End production
  • Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Orchestrations, Outstanding Lighting Design, and Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical
  • Grammy Awards: nomination for Best Musical Theater Album for the original Broadway cast recording
By March 2026, the Broadway production had grossed over $319 million, and the show had sold more than seven million tickets worldwide.

What is the fan culture around MJ The Musical?

MJ The Musical draws a crowd that mixes longtime Michael Jackson fans with Broadway regulars, and the audience tends to arrive already knowing the music. The run of recognizable hits turns the theater into something closer to a concert at points, with the energy rising around numbers like Thriller and Man in the Mirror. The show's October 31 performances have included a special Halloween closing number of Thriller, a nod to the song's place in the season. The musical's reach widened over time through its national tour and international productions, helping its following stretch well past New York.
