About LSU Tigers Football

LSU Tigers football has been woven into the fabric of Baton Rouge since 1893, when chemistry professor Dr. Charles E. Coates organized the school's first team, which faced Tulane in New Orleans. What grew from that start is one of college football's most decorated programs: four national championships, 12 SEC titles, and a home venue, Tiger Stadium, that packs in more than 102,000 fans on fall Saturdays. The purple and gold, as legend has it, were chosen because they were Mardi Gras colors.

The championship eras stack up across more than a century. LSU was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference in 1933, and Paul Dietzel's 1958 team delivered the program's first national title with a perfect 11-0 season. Nick Saban brought LSU back to the top in 2003, Les Miles won it all again in 2007, and Ed Orgeron's 2019 team went 15-0 behind quarterback Joe Burrow and beat Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship in New Orleans. In all, LSU counts 16 conference championships across three conferences.

Game day is where the program separates from the pack. Tailgaters claim their spots days before kickoff in a scene that national outlets have repeatedly ranked among the best in college football, Mike the Tiger, a live tiger mascot, walks down Victory Hill before every home game, and Garth Brooks' "Callin' Baton Rouge" plays at every game. When a big rival comes to Death Valley, the whole city recalibrates around kickoff.

How many national championships have the LSU Tigers won?

The LSU Tigers have won four national championships: 1958, 2003, 2007, and 2019.
  • 1958: Paul Dietzel's Tigers went 11-0, shut out Clemson 7-0 in the Sugar Bowl, and finished No. 1 in the AP and Coaches polls as the only undefeated team in the country.
  • 2003: Nick Saban's squad won the SEC Championship Game and beat Oklahoma 21-14 in the Sugar Bowl for the BCS national title, LSU's first since 1958.
  • 2007: Les Miles' Tigers beat No. 1 Ohio State 38-24 in the BCS National Championship Game, making LSU the first school to win two BCS titles.
  • 2019: Ed Orgeron's team went a perfect 15-0, beat Oklahoma 63-28 in the playoff semifinal, and topped defending champion Clemson 42-25 in the College Football Playoff National Championship in New Orleans.
Alongside the national titles, LSU has won 12 SEC championships, and marquee games in Death Valley rank among the toughest tickets in college football.

Which LSU football players have won the Heisman Trophy?

Three LSU players have won the Heisman Trophy: Billy Cannon in 1959, Joe Burrow in 2019, and Jayden Daniels in 2023. Cannon's campaign lives on through the Halloween Run, an 89-yard punt return against No. 3 Ole Miss in which he broke seven tackles to score the only points LSU needed in a 7-3 win. Burrow's 2019 season was one of the most productive in the award's history, with 4,366 passing yards, an SEC single-season record, and 44 touchdown passes, a school record. The pipeline runs deep beyond the Heisman: LSU players have been selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft three times, with Cannon in 1960, JaMarcus Russell in 2007, and Burrow in 2020, and more than 40 Tigers have earned consensus All-American honors.

What is game day like for LSU Tigers Football at Tiger Stadium?

LSU home games take over an entire weekend, and by kickoff Tiger Stadium is one of the loudest settings in college football. The Tigers first played a home game at night in 1931, partly to escape the South Louisiana heat, and night football became the program's signature: between 1960 and 2022, LSU went 237-68-4 under the lights, and The Sporting News named "Saturday Night in Death Valley" the top tradition in college football. The volume is not an exaggeration. When the Tigers scored the winning touchdown against Auburn in 1988, the crowd's roar registered on a seismograph in a campus science building, and the game has been known as the Earthquake Game ever since. From the white jerseys LSU traditionally wears at home, a look Paul Dietzel started in 1958, to the Cajun French "Geaux Tigers" cheer, the whole production is unmistakably Baton Rouge. For many fans, LSU Tigers football tickets to a Saturday night game are the whole point.

Who are the biggest rivals of the LSU Tigers?

Alabama is the rivalry most LSU fans circle first. The series became an annual fixture in the 1960s and turned white-hot after Nick Saban, who coached LSU to the 2003 national championship, took over the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2007, and the 2011 "Game of the Century" saw No. 1 LSU edge No. 2 Alabama 9-6 in overtime. The Ole Miss Rebels play LSU for the Magnolia Bowl trophy in a rivalry that carried conference and national title stakes through the 1950s and 1960s. The Arkansas Razorbacks meet the Tigers in the Battle for the Golden Boot, named for a 175-pound, 24-karat gold trophy shaped like the two states. The Texas A&M Aggies series dates to 1899 and includes a seven-overtime 74-72 game in 2018, the most overtimes in FBS history. LSU's oldest rival is the Tulane Green Wave, the opponent in the program's very first game in 1893.
