About League of Legends World Championship

The League of Legends World Championship, known to fans simply as Worlds, is the biggest event in competitive esports. Organized by Riot Games since 2011, Worlds crowns the best League of Legends team on the planet each year. The tournament rotates across major cities worldwide, from Los Angeles and Seoul to Paris, London, and Shanghai, filling arenas that typically host major concerts and professional sports. Peak concurrent viewership topped 73 million during the 2021 final, and the 2019 final drew more than 100 million total viewers, making Worlds consistently the most watched esports competition in the world.

What separates Worlds from other esports events is the production value. The opening ceremonies have featured live musical performances from artists like Imagine Dragons, who performed "Warriors" at the 2014 final in Seoul, and Lil Nas X, who collaborated with Riot Games on the 2022 anthem "Star Walkin'." Riot also debuted K/DA, a virtual K-pop group, during the 2018 ceremony in Incheon. The finals have taken place at venues like the 45,000-seat Seoul World Cup Stadium, The O2 in London, Chase Center in San Francisco, and Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, giving the event an atmosphere that rivals traditional major league championships.

What is the League of Legends World Championship?

Worlds is the annual championship tournament for professional League of Legends, organized by Riot Games. It brings together top teams from regional leagues across South Korea (LCK), China (LPL), EMEA (LEC), North America (LCS), and the Asia-Pacific region. Teams qualify through their domestic league placements and compete through a multi-stage format that includes a play-in round, a Swiss-system group stage, and a single-elimination knockout bracket. The winning team lifts the Summoner's Cup, a trophy originally commissioned by Riot Games and redesigned in partnership with Tiffany & Co. in 2022. The tournament has been held every year since 2011, when Fnatic claimed the inaugural title at DreamHack in Sweden.

Which teams have won the League of Legends World Championship?

South Korea's T1 (formerly SK Telecom T1) holds the record with six titles, won in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2023, 2024, and 2025. T1 became the first team to win three consecutive championships. Other winners include:
  • Fnatic (2011, Season 1 at DreamHack Summer in Sweden)
  • Taipei Assassins (2012, defeating Azubu Frost at the Galen Center in Los Angeles)
  • Samsung White (2014, at Seoul World Cup Stadium)
  • Samsung Galaxy (2017, sweeping SK Telecom T1 3-0 in Beijing)
  • Invictus Gaming (2018, China's first world title)
  • FunPlus Phoenix (2019, securing back-to-back titles for the LPL)
  • Damwon Gaming (2020, in Shanghai)
  • Edward Gaming (2021, in Reykjavik)
  • DRX (2022, the first team to win after starting from the play-in stage)
South Korean teams from the LCK have won 10 of the 15 titles held through 2025, with Chinese LPL teams claiming three.

What are some record-setting moments in League of Legends World Championship history?

Worlds has produced several landmark moments in esports history. The 2014 final filled the 45,000-seat Seoul World Cup Stadium, one of the largest live audiences for a competitive gaming event at the time. Viewership has grown steadily since the 1.6 million who watched the Season 1 broadcast in 2011. The 2018 final drew 99.6 million unique viewers with a peak of 44 million concurrent. The 2019 final crossed 100 million total viewers for the first time. T1's Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok became the first player to win five world titles, achieving the milestone in 2024 at The O2 in London. DRX's 2022 run remains one of the most celebrated underdog stories in esports, as they entered as Korea's fourth seed through the play-in stage and won the entire tournament at Chase Center in San Francisco.

What is the fan culture like at the League of Legends World Championship?

Worlds draws a passionate, global fanbase that travels across countries to attend matches in person. The crowd energy at Worlds finals is comparable to what you find at major sporting events, with coordinated chants, team-specific banners, and cosplay throughout the venue. The tournament's opening ceremonies have become events in their own right, blending live music, augmented reality, and cinematic production. Riot Games has released official anthems for each tournament since 2014, creating a shared soundtrack that fans follow year to year. The event rotates across regions, giving fans in different parts of the world the chance to experience Worlds live. South Korean fans in particular bring an intense atmosphere rooted in the country's deep competitive gaming culture, while European and North American events draw crowds that mix casual viewers with dedicated esports followers.
