About Jay-Z
Jay-Z, born Shawn Corey Carter in Brooklyn, New York City, grew up in the Marcy Houses projects of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Surrounded by his parents' soul music collection, artists like Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway shaped his ear long before he picked up a microphone. After years of honing his craft alongside mentor Jaz-O, he co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995 with Damon Dash and Kareem Burke. His 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, earned critical acclaim and established him as a serious lyrical force in East Coast hip-hop.
The commercial explosion came with Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life in 1998, which sold over six million copies in the United States and earned 6x Platinum certification. From there, Jay-Z released a streak of albums that each debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, including The Blueprint (2001), The Black Album (2003), American Gangster (2007), and 4:44 (2017). With 14 number-one albums on the chart, he holds the third-highest total in Billboard 200 history. He served as president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings from 2004 to 2007, helping launch the careers of artists like Ye, Rihanna, and Ne-Yo. He later founded Roc Nation in 2008, building a multi-platform entertainment company spanning music, management, and publishing.
Across more than three decades, Jay-Z has sold over 125 million records worldwide and earned 25 Grammy Awards. His lyricism, rooted in double entendres, wordplay, and narratives of his rise from Brooklyn's housing projects, has influenced generations of artists. He is known for composing his lyrics entirely in his head, a technique that contributes to the fluid, conversational delivery that defines his style. Whether headlining Madison Square Garden or commanding festival stages around the world, Jay-Z tickets represent one of the most compelling live experiences in hip-hop.
