Inter Miami CF brought top-flight soccer back to South Florida when Major League Soccer awarded the region its expansion franchise on January 29, 2018. The club, officially Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, began play in 2020 and carries a distinctly Miami identity: a pink, black, white, and blue palette, and a crest built around two white herons whose interlocking legs form a letter M. That crest holds its own details, including seven sun rays that honor the number David Beckham wore and a three-pointed shield representing Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.
The Herons played their first MLS match on March 1, 2020, and earned the first win in club history that August against Orlando City SC. Diego Alonso led the inaugural side, and the club spent its early seasons at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale while a permanent home took shape. That home arrived with Nu Stadium, a new venue near Miami International Airport that anchors the Freedom Park development.
Everything changed in 2023, when Lionel Messi signed with Inter Miami and turned the club into a global draw. Messi's debut that July ended an 11-game winless run, and the club lifted its first trophy weeks later at the 2023 Leagues Cup. The run kept building, with a Supporters' Shield in 2024, a league-record 74 points in that same regular season, and the club's first MLS Cup in 2025. Inter Miami also became the first MLS side to win a FIFA Club World Cup match.
Awards have followed the on-field success. Messi won his eighth Ballon d'Or in October 2023, becoming the first player to claim the honor while with an MLS club. Average attendance at Inter Miami home matches climbed from roughly 2,200 in the club's debut season to more than 21,000 by 2024, a measure of how quickly the Herons became one of the most-watched teams in the league.
The supporter culture is as Miami as the crest itself. Four official supporters groups carry the matchday atmosphere, each with its own section of the stands.
