About Indiana Fever

The Indiana Fever have been Indianapolis's team in the Women's National Basketball Association since 2000, when the league granted the city an expansion franchise to coincide with the opening of Gainbridge Fieldhouse, then known as Conseco Fieldhouse. The launch campaign came with a slogan that stuck: "In 49 states it's just basketball, but this is Indiana." More than two decades later, that line still captures why basketball matters in this state, and the Fever have been the professional standard-bearer for the women's game in Indiana ever since. The team competes in the WNBA's Eastern Conference and has called Indianapolis home for its entire history.

The franchise's defining era revolved around Tamika Catchings, the third overall pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft who became the greatest player in team history. Catchings won Rookie of the Year in 2002, league MVP in 2011, and Finals MVP in 2012, when the Fever defeated the Minnesota Lynx 3 games to 1 to claim the franchise's first WNBA championship. Indiana reached three WNBA Finals, falling to the Phoenix Mercury in five games in 2009 and to the Lynx in five in 2015, and piled up a WNBA record 12 consecutive playoff appearances from 2005 through 2016.

A rebuild delivered the next wave. Indiana earned the number one pick in consecutive drafts and selected Aliyah Boston of South Carolina in 2023 and Caitlin Clark of Iowa in 2024, and interest in the Fever surged to levels the league had not seen since its early years. The 2024 team returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016 behind Clark, the first true rookie to lead the WNBA in assists, while home crowds averaged more than 17,000 fans to lead the league in attendance, outdrawing the NBA's Indiana Pacers on a per-game basis. In 2025 the Fever hosted the WNBA All-Star Game for the first time, won the Commissioner's Cup, and pushed the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces to a deciding fifth game in the semifinals. Few players have changed a franchise's ticket demand the way Clark changed Indiana's.

Who are the greatest players in Indiana Fever history?

Tamika Catchings is the standard, and it is not close. The forward spent her entire 15-year career in Indiana, won the 2011 league MVP, earned five Defensive Player of the Year awards, and had her number 24 retired by the franchise. The rest of the Fever story was written by players across every era of the team:
  • Katie Douglas and Briann January, core pieces of the 2012 championship team.
  • Natalie Williams, the Olympian forward acquired before the 2003 season.
  • Erica Wheeler, the 2019 All-Star Game MVP.
  • Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull, homegrown guards from the rebuild years.
  • Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark, back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners in 2023 and 2024.
Catchings entered the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020, followed by former teammate Yolanda Griffith in 2021, and the franchise's coaching tree includes Hall of Famers Anne Donovan, Marianne Stanley, and 2012 title-winning coach Lin Dunn.

How many WNBA championships have the Indiana Fever won?

The Indiana Fever have won one WNBA championship, in 2012. Indiana defeated the Minnesota Lynx 3 games to 1 in the Finals, with Tamika Catchings earning Finals MVP honors. The Fever also reached the Finals in 2009, falling to the Phoenix Mercury in five games, and in 2015, when the Lynx took the series in five games. Those trips account for the franchise's three Eastern Conference titles (2009, 2012, and 2015), and the Fever added their first Commissioner's Cup championship in 2025.

Who is the biggest rival of the Indiana Fever?

The Detroit Shock were the Indiana Fever's fiercest rival through the Catchings years, with the teams meeting in the playoffs four straight seasons from 2006 through 2009, including a pair of Eastern Conference Finals. The franchise's rivalry list now runs through the Eastern Conference: the Connecticut Sun, New York Liberty, Chicago Sky, and Atlanta Dream. The Sun series carries the most history, from a triple-overtime Game 1 in 2007 to Indiana's 22-point comeback later in that same series, the largest in WNBA playoff history, plus another first-round meeting in 2024. The New York Liberty stood across from the Fever in the franchise's first playoff series in 2002.

What awards have Indiana Fever players won?

Indiana Fever players have won just about every major individual honor in the WNBA, headlined by a league MVP, a Finals MVP, and three Rookie of the Year awards. The full trophy case:
  • 2011 WNBA MVP: Tamika Catchings.
  • 2012 Finals MVP: Tamika Catchings.
  • Defensive Player of the Year: Tamika Catchings, five times (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2012).
  • Rookie of the Year: Tamika Catchings (2002), Aliyah Boston (2023), and Caitlin Clark (2024).
  • 2019 All-Star Game MVP: Erica Wheeler.
  • 2025 Commissioner's Cup Final MVP: Natasha Howard.
On the all-league side, Catchings earned seven All-WNBA First Team selections, Caitlin Clark added a First Team nod in 2024 to go with the league assists title, and Kelsey Mitchell made the First Team in 2025.

What is Indiana Fever fan culture like?

Indiana Fever fans fill Gainbridge Fieldhouse at a volume the rest of the league rarely sees. The Fever led the WNBA in attendance in 2024, averaging more than 17,000 fans per home game with 16 sellouts, and stayed near the top of the league in 2025. The surge runs deeper than the building: the 2024 WNBA draft drew 2.5 million viewers, more than the combined ratings for every WNBA game over the prior 25 seasons, and the Fever set television viewership records with numbers the league had not posted since its early years. When Indianapolis hosted the 2025 All-Star Game, tickets to the weekend's events sold out within seven hours. Add a state where basketball is part of the identity, a fanbase that followed the team loudly on the road, and mascot Freddy Fever working the crowd, and a Fever night at the Fieldhouse ranks among the best atmospheres in women's basketball.
