About Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters formed in Seattle in 1994 as a one-man project. Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana, booked studio time that October and bashed out a batch of his own songs in a matter of days, playing nearly every instrument himself. The band name comes from "foo fighter", a World War II term for unidentified flying objects. What started as a private creative outlet grew into one of the most decorated rock bands of the modern era, with a sound built on alternative rock, post-grunge, hard rock, and big-hook pop rock.

The self-titled debut album arrived in 1995, and Grohl built a real band around the songs, with bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Pat Smear joining early and the group playing its first show at the Jambalaya Club in Arcata, California that February. The hits stacked up quickly. "Learn to Fly" gave the band its first Billboard Hot 100 entry in 1999, "The Pretender" spent a record 19 weeks at number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart in 2007, and Wasting Light, tracked in Grohl's garage on analog tape with producer Butch Vig, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2011. The band kept evolving from there, from the eight-city HBO experiment behind 2014's Sonic Highways to 2017's Concrete and Gold, which featured Paul McCartney on drums and became their second U.S. chart-topper. Foo Fighters released their eleventh album, But Here We Are, in 2023, followed by Your Favorite Toy in 2026.

On stage is where Foo Fighters have always made their name. They headlined Wembley Stadium in 2008 with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin sitting in, played London's Hyde Park in 2006 with guest spots from Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, and have repeatedly topped festival bills in England at Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, and Glastonbury. Their shows run long and deep: a 2012 club date in Charlotte stretched to nearly three and a half hours across 36 songs. Whether Foo Fighters tickets are for a stadium run or a surprise club set under an alias like The Holy Shits, the crowd knows every word.

Who are the members of Foo Fighters?

Foo Fighters are led by founder Dave Grohl on lead vocals and guitar, backed by a core lineup of longtime bandmates:
  • Dave Grohl: founder, lead vocals, and guitar, and the writer of nearly all the band's material since the first album.
  • Nate Mendel: bass, a member since 1995.
  • Pat Smear: guitar, first joined in 1995 and returned as a full-time member in 2010 after years of touring with the group.
  • Chris Shiflett: guitar and backing vocals, onboard since 1999.
  • Rami Jaffee: keyboards, a touring collaborator for years before becoming an official member in 2016.
  • Ilan Rubin: drums, joined in 2025 after earlier touring work with Nine Inch Nails.
Earlier lineups featured drummers William Goldsmith, Taylor Hawkins, and Josh Freese, along with guitarist Franz Stahl.

What are the most popular Foo Fighters songs?

The Foo Fighters catalog is anchored by a run of modern rock standards that still fill setlists and rock radio:
  • Everlong, the band's defining single from 1997
  • Learn to Fly, the band's first Billboard Hot 100 entry
  • My Hero and Monkey Wrench, from 1997's The Colour and the Shape
  • All My Life, Times Like These, and Best of You
  • The Pretender, which logged a record 19 weeks at number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart
  • Run and The Sky Is a Neighborhood, both Mainstream Rock chart-toppers in 2017
These are the songs Foo Fighters crowds show up singing.

What awards have Foo Fighters won?

Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album five times, which ranks them among the most successful rock acts in Grammy history. The honors span three decades:
  • Grammy Awards: 15 wins, starting with the 2000 Grammy for the "Learn to Fly" music video, three Best Hard Rock Performance wins for "All My Life", "The Pretender", and "White Limo", and a five-win night for Wasting Light in 2012.
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: inducted in October 2021, in the band's first year of eligibility.
  • MTV Video Music Awards: the first-ever Global Icon Award in 2021, plus Best Rock Video for "Walk" in 2011.
  • Kerrang! Awards: three wins.

What is the Foo Fighters fan community like?

Foo Fighters fans are known less for a nickname and more for doing things that get the band's attention. In 2015, a thousand Italian fans gathered in Cesena and played "Learn to Fly" in unison as a public invitation to come play their city, and the viral video worked: Foo Fighters booked a Cesena show that November. A year earlier, fans in Richmond, Virginia crowdfunded a tour stop and the band answered with a 23-song, two-and-a-half-hour set for about 1,500 of them. The band plays along too, staging surprise club shows under alias names like The Holy Shits, and once pulled the singer of tribute act UK Foo Fighters onstage in Brighton to sing a song. Grohl's frontman humor sets the tone, from a 2016 mockumentary joking that he was leaving rock for electronic music to his shout that headlining Wembley Stadium with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones was the greatest day of his entire life. When David Letterman closed his final Late Show in 2015, he introduced Foo Fighters as "my favorite band, playing my favorite song", and they sent him off with "Everlong".
