Evanescence formed in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1994, when 13-year-old Amy Lee met 14-year-old guitarist Ben Moody at a youth camp and the two began writing music together within a month. As a duo they played acoustic sets at Little Rock bookstores and coffee houses and self-released EPs and a demo CD, imagining a sound they could not yet afford: strings, choirs, and the drama of a film score set against heavy guitars. They settled on the name Evanescence, a word meaning disappearance or fading away, and built the band on unlikely combinations, with Lee drawing on classical piano training, the film scores of Danny Elfman, and influences spanning classical, grunge, and electronica.
The breakthrough came fast. Wind-up Records signed the band in 2001 after its head of A&R heard the demos, and Fallen arrived in March 2003, carried by Bring Me to Life and My Immortal, both featured on the soundtrack of the film Daredevil. Bring Me to Life reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at number one in the UK, and Fallen went on to sell more than 17 million copies worldwide while logging 43 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200. At the 2004 Grammy Awards, Evanescence won Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance. The Open Door followed in 2006, giving the band its first Billboard 200 number one on the way to more than six million copies sold worldwide, and the self-titled Evanescence album repeated the feat in 2011 as the first record written by the full band.
Evanescence went independent in 2014 and kept reshaping its own catalog. Synthesis (2017) rebuilt earlier songs into orchestral and electronic arrangements and sent the band on tour with live orchestras for the first time, and The Bitter Truth (2021) reached the top five of the Billboard Independent, Alternative, and Hard Rock charts. By 2022 the band had sold 31.9 million albums, ranking among the best-selling hard rock and metal artists of all time. The live show remains the centerpiece: at Download Festival in 2023, Evanescence played to what was considered the biggest crowd ever for the event's second stage, and the band's biggest solo headlining show took place at Allianz Parque stadium in São Paulo that same year. Rolling Stone credited the band with bringing theatrics and a much-needed femininity to the hard-rock boys' club of the early 2000s, and Kerrang! named Evanescence one of heavy music's most important and influential bands. That is the case for Evanescence tickets: gothic drama, classical grandeur, and heavy riffs delivered by one of the most distinctive voices in rock.
