Cody Johnson grew up in Sebastopol, a small community northeast of Huntsville, Texas, where he picked up guitar at age 12 learning from his father in their local church. Before music became his full-time calling, Johnson rode bulls professionally at local rodeos and worked in the Texas prison system alongside his dad. At 19, the prison warden encouraged him to chase music for real, and Johnson never looked back.
He formed the Cody Johnson Band in 2006, released his debut album through his own CoJo label, and spent nearly a decade grinding through the Texas music scene without major label backing. That independent hustle paid off in a big way when his sixth album, Gotta Be Me, debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart in 2016, all on the strength of a loyal fanbase and relentless touring. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2017 and became the first unsigned artist to sell out the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2018. His seventh album, Ain't Nothin' to It, marked his first major-label release through Warner Records Nashville in 2019, opening the door to a wider audience while keeping the neotraditional country sound that built his following.
Johnson's music sits at the crossroads of contemporary country, neotraditional country, and what he simply calls "me." Influenced by George Strait, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, and Loretta Lynn, he draws from classic country traditions without mimicking them. CMT has described him as a leader within the "back to country" movement, and his live shows reflect that authenticity. Songs like "Me and My Kind" went viral on TikTok in 2020 and became a crowd singalong staple, and his sold-out tours across the U.S. and Australia confirm a fanbase that shows up loud and stays engaged from the first note to the last.
