The Carolina Hurricanes took the long road to Raleigh. The franchise launched in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association, won the league's first Avco World Trophy championship in 1973, and joined the NHL in 1979 as the Hartford Whalers. In 1997 the club headed south to the Research Triangle and became the Carolina Hurricanes, trading Whalers blue and green for the black and red worn today. After two seasons of home games in Greensboro while the new Raleigh arena was finished, the Hurricanes moved into their permanent home in 1999 as the first major professional sports team based in Raleigh.
Once the team put down roots, the hockey got good in a hurry. In 2002 the Hurricanes reached the franchise's first Stanley Cup Final, with CBC broadcaster Don Cherry calling their building "the loudest building in the NHL." In 2006 Carolina rolled up a 112-point regular season and won its first Stanley Cup, beating the Edmonton Oilers in game 7 behind rookie goaltender Cam Ward, who took home the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The modern chapter has been just as rewarding: owner Tom Dundon hired former captain Rod Brind'Amour as head coach in 2018, and the "Bunch of Jerks" era delivered a steady run of division titles plus a second Stanley Cup in 2026, sealed by a six-game Final win over the Vegas Golden Knights with captain Jordan Staal winning the Conn Smythe.
Game nights at Lenovo Center have a character all their own, with a tailgating crowd borrowed from college football, a goal horn that dates back to the Hartford Civic Center, and a fanbase that embraces both its Whalers past and its Carolina present. Hurricanes tickets put you in one of hockey's loudest rooms, in a market that has fully adopted the sport.
