About BTS

BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan, is a seven-member South Korean group that redefined what a global pop act looks like. Formed in 2010 around rapper RM and launched in 2013 by Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE), the group built its foundation on hip-hop before expanding into pop, R&B, EDM, and beyond. Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook co-write and co-produce much of their material, drawing on influences that range from old-school rap to contemporary electronic production. What started as a small Seoul act grew into one of the most commercially dominant musical groups in history, with over 40 million albums sold in South Korea alone.

BTS debuted with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool in 2013 and spent their early years building a following through mixtapes, social media, and relentless touring. Wings (2016) sold over one million copies in South Korea and marked a turning point. The Love Yourself series pushed them into mainstream Western consciousness, and Love Yourself: Tear (2018) became the first K-pop album to top the Billboard 200. In 2020, Dynamite debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making BTS the first all-South Korean act to reach that position. Butter, Permission to Dance, and My Universe (with Coldplay) followed as additional US number-one singles, making BTS the fastest act to accumulate six chart-toppers since the Beatles in 1966.

BTS became the first non-English-speaking and Asian act to sell out Wembley Stadium and Rose Bowl Stadium during their Love Yourself World Tour in 2019, and played stadium shows at SoFi Stadium, MetLife Stadium, and Citi Field. Tickets for shows across those tours regularly sold out within minutes. All seven members completed mandatory South Korean military service by June 2025, and the group released Arirang in March 2026 alongside a new world tour. A BTS concert is a full-scale production with synchronized choreography, elaborate staging, and setlists that span their entire catalog from early hip-hop tracks to global pop anthems. The ARMY fandom, one of the largest and most organized fan communities in music, creates an atmosphere at live shows that few other acts can match.

Who are the members of BTS?

BTS has seven members, each contributing distinct skills to the group's live performances and recordings.
  • RM (Kim Namjoon): Leader and rapper. Known for his lyricism and fluent English, RM was the underground Seoul rapper around whom the group was originally formed.
  • Jin (Kim Seokjin): Vocalist recognized for his wide range and stage presence.
  • Suga (Min Yoongi): Rapper and producer who has released solo work under the name Agust D. His background as an underground rapper helped shape the group's hip-hop foundation.
  • J-Hope (Jung Hoseok): Rapper and lead dancer, often cited as the driving force behind BTS's choreography.
  • Jimin (Park Jimin): Vocalist and dancer whose contemporary dance training is central to the group's visual performance.
  • V (Kim Taehyung): Vocalist with a distinctive baritone and a growing solo career in music and acting.
  • Jung Kook (Jeon Jungkook): The youngest member (maknae) and a vocalist whose versatility spans pop, R&B, and dance tracks. His solo single Seven charted globally during the group's hiatus.

What are BTS's most popular songs?

BTS has a deep catalog spanning over a decade, with hits across multiple eras of the group's evolution.

  • Boy With Luv (featuring Halsey), an electro-pop single that debuted at number eight on the Hot 100 in 2019
  • Fake Love, BTS's first top-10 single on the Hot 100 and the lead track from Love Yourself: Tear
  • Spring Day, a fan favorite that won Best Song of the Year at the 2017 Melon Music Awards
  • DNA, the group's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and a turning point in their crossover to Western audiences

What awards has BTS won?

BTS has accumulated one of the most extensive award collections in modern music, spanning both Western and Korean industries.

What is the BTS ARMY?

ARMY stands for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth and is BTS's official fandom, established in 2013 alongside the group's debut. The community is widely considered one of the most organized and influential fan bases in music. ARMY members coordinate streaming campaigns that drive chart performance, organize large-scale charitable initiatives (including matching BTS's own contributions to organizations like UNICEF through the Love Myself campaign), and create a unified, high-energy atmosphere at live shows. Fan projects at concerts often include coordinated light stick displays, synchronized fan chants for every song, and community gatherings on event days. BTS has engaged directly with ARMY through social media and the BTS Universe alternate storyline since their earliest days, building a relationship that scholars have described as a mutual exchange between artists and fans that extends the group's message of positivity into the world.
