Bryson Djuan Tiller was born on January 2, 1993, in Louisville, Kentucky, and started singing and rapping at 15. He put out his first project, the mixtape Killer Instinct Vol. 1, in 2011, then stepped away from music in 2013 to work at Papa John's and UPS while providing for his daughter. The turnaround started in October 2014, when he uploaded his single "Don't" to SoundCloud and industry insiders began paying attention. Co-signs from producer Timbaland and Drake brought major-label interest, and Tiller signed with RCA Records in August 2015 after passing on an offer from Drake's OVO Sound.
"Don't" peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned quintuple platinum certification from the RIAA, setting up his debut album, Trapsoul, in October 2015. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 11, climbed to number eight, and went triple platinum behind the Grammy-nominated "Exchange" and the double platinum "Sorry Not Sorry." Rolling Stone had named him one of their 10 New Artists You Need to Know a month before release, and Trapsoul closed the year on best-of lists from Complex, The Root, and PopSugar.
The run since has made him a fixture of modern R&B. He guested alongside Rihanna on DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" in 2017, a single that peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the UK Singles Chart, and was certified nonuple platinum. His second album, True to Self, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 that same year, Anniversary followed in 2020 with a guest feature from Drake, and his self-titled fourth album arrived in 2024 behind the triple platinum top-20 single "Whatever She Wants." His fifth album, Solace & The Vices, landed in 2025. Tiller describes his sound as trap and hip-hop-influenced R&B, "the perfect marriage between hip hop and R&B," and credits Omarion with making him want to sing and The Dream with teaching him the craft of songwriting.
