Breaking Benjamin is an American rock band from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, formed in 1999 by vocalist and guitarist Benjamin Burnley. Built on a foundation of hard rock, post-grunge, and alternative metal, the band carved out a distinct identity with heavy guitar riffs, soaring choruses, and introspective lyrics that hit a nerve with rock fans across the country. What started as a local act playing clubs in northeastern Pennsylvania grew into one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 2000s, with over 19 million units sold in the United States alone.
The band's debut album, Saturate, arrived in 2002 after a self-released EP caught the attention of Hollywood Records. We Are Not Alone followed in 2004, reaching No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and earning platinum certification. Phobia (2006) pushed Breaking Benjamin further into the mainstream, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with over 131,000 copies sold in its first week. Dear Agony (2009) continued the momentum, debuting at No. 4. After a hiatus that lasted from 2010 to 2014, Burnley assembled a new lineup and released Dark Before Dawn in 2015, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 135,000 pure album sales in its first week. Ember (2018) debuted at No. 3 on the same chart. Across those records, Breaking Benjamin earned three RIAA-certified platinum albums, two gold albums, and a catalog of certified singles that includes three multi-platinum, three platinum, and six gold certifications.
Breaking Benjamin has shared stages with some of the biggest names in rock, touring alongside Evanescence, Seether, Three Days Grace, Nickelback, Shinedown, Disturbed, Alice in Chains, Korn, and Staind. Their live shows are known for three-part vocal harmonies, layered guitar arrangements, and frequent guest appearances from musicians on the same bill. The band rarely tours outside North America, making their occasional overseas appearances a notable event for international fans.
