The Baltimore Ravens joined the NFL in 1996, when longtime Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell moved his franchise to Baltimore. As part of the settlement that followed, the Browns name, colors, history and records stayed in Cleveland, and Baltimore began as a new expansion franchise. The Ravens name came from a fan contest that drew 33,288 voters and honors Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven," a tribute to the writer who spent part of his career in Baltimore and is buried there. The team competes in the AFC North and plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium, with its headquarters and practice facility in Owings Mills, Maryland. Steve Bisciotti has been the majority owner since 2004.
Since their first snap, the Ravens have been defined by defense. The 2000 squad won Super Bowl XXXV and set an NFL record by allowing just 165 points across a 16-game season, a mark that still stands, and that unit is regularly named among the greatest defenses in league history. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Jonathan Ogden, all drafted by the franchise in its early years, went on to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Baltimore added a second title in Super Bowl XLVII after the 2012 season, a run that included a 38-35 double-overtime win at Denver and an AFC championship victory over the New England Patriots.
The modern era has been powered by quarterback Lamar Jackson, drafted in 2018. In 2019 he led the Ravens to a franchise-best 14-2 record and became a unanimous NFL MVP, and he later broke the single-season rushing record for a quarterback. Kicker Justin Tucker set the NFL record with a 66-yard field goal in 2021. Baltimore has reached the playoffs 16 times since 2000 and owns one of the highest regular-season winning percentages among active franchises. Home games at M&T Bank Stadium carry a distinct purple-and-black identity, with a loud, defense-first crowd and one of the NFL's few remaining marching bands.
