About Athletics

The Athletics are one of the most decorated franchises in baseball: nine World Series championships, 15 American League pennants, and 17 division titles, a haul second in the AL only to the New York Yankees. One of the league's eight charter clubs, the team known to generations of fans as the A's has played since 1901 and has called more cities home than any other MLB franchise: Philadelphia, Kansas City, Oakland, and, since 2025, West Sacramento, California. Athletics tickets at Sutter Health Park, the home the team shares with the Sacramento River Cats, offer the chance to watch a century-old franchise chart its next era, with MLB owners having approved a move to a new Las Vegas ballpark targeted for 2028.

Founded in Philadelphia in 1901, the franchise won five World Series titles there under Connie Mack, the owner and manager for its first 50 years, with all-time greats like Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, and Home Run Baker in the fold. A 1955 move to Kansas City was followed by a 1968 arrival in Oakland, where the Oakland Coliseum hosted the club through 2024. The Oakland years produced two dynasties: the Swingin' A's won three straight World Series from 1972 through 1974 behind Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and Rollie Fingers, and the late-1980s Bash Brothers era saw Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire slug the team to three consecutive pennants and the 1989 title. In 2002, the A's ripped off an American League record 20 consecutive wins, a season that pioneered the use of sabermetrics and became the story behind Michael Lewis's book Moneyball.

A's fans have stayed loyal through every stop of the franchise's journey, and the team's identity has traveled with them. The kelly green and gold colors, introduced in Kansas City in the 1960s, remain among the most distinctive in baseball, and the white cleats the club wore for decades became a signature look. Since 2018 the franchise has honored its own with the Athletics Hall of Fame, where every inductee receives a portrait and a bright green jacket, and Moneyball-era favorites like Eric Chavez, Miguel Tejada, Barry Zito, and Mark Mulder have all earned induction. At the center of it all is the elephant, the franchise's unlikely symbol for more than a century.

How many World Series have the Athletics won?

The Athletics have won nine World Series championships, the second most of any American League franchise behind the New York Yankees. The titles break down across three distinct eras of the franchise's history.
  • Philadelphia (5 titles): 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930, all under Connie Mack.
  • Oakland dynasty (3 titles): 1972, 1973, and 1974, when the Swingin' A's rolled to three straight championships behind Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and Rollie Fingers.
  • Bash Brothers era (1 title): 1989, the capstone of three consecutive pennants from 1988 through 1990, led by Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Rickey Henderson, and Dennis Eckersley.
Add in 15 AL pennants and 17 division titles, and the Athletics own one of the deepest trophy cases in the sport.

Who is the biggest rival of the Athletics?

The San Francisco Giants are the Athletics' most storied rival. The cross-bay matchup, known as the Bay Bridge Series or simply the Battle of the Bay, peaked when the two clubs met in the 1989 World Series, which the A's won for the franchise's most recent championship. Interleague play kept the feud alive from 1997 through 2024, with the Athletics holding a 76 to 72 edge in those games, and the matchup became known as the Interstate 80 Series after the 2025 move to West Sacramento. The Los Angeles Angels are the other long-running rival, an AL West feud that began with the A's 1968 arrival in California and peaked in the early 2000s when both clubs were annual contenders. The Athletics lead that all-time series 541 to 491.

Which Hall of Famers played for the Athletics?

Forty-six Hall of Famers are affiliated with the Athletics franchise, per the National Baseball Hall of Fame, spread across every era of the team's history. The largest groups by era:
  • Philadelphia era (21): Ty Cobb, Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Home Run Baker, Chief Bender, Eddie Plank, Rube Waddell, and Al Simmons, plus owner and manager Connie Mack.
  • Kansas City era (6): Satchel Paige and Tommy Lasorda are among the honorees.
  • Oakland era (19): Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley, Joe Morgan, and Frank Thomas, plus manager Tony La Russa.
The Athletics have also retired the numbers of several of those Oakland legends, including Reggie Jackson's 9, Rickey Henderson's 24, Catfish Hunter's 27, the 34 shared by Rollie Fingers and Dave Stewart, and Dennis Eckersley's 43. Jackie Robinson's 42 is retired across all of baseball, and the letter A was honored in 1995 for longtime owner Walter A. Haas Jr.

Why is the Athletics mascot an elephant?

The elephant began as an insult that Connie Mack flipped into a badge of honor. In 1905, New York Giants manager John McGraw mocked the franchise as a white elephant on the hands of majority owner Benjamin Shibe, so Mack defiantly adopted the animal as the team's symbol and presented McGraw with a stuffed toy elephant at that year's World Series. The elephant appeared on A's sweaters by 1909 and on the regular jersey by 1918, and nicknames like the Elephants and the Green Elephants have stuck with the club ever since. The costumed mascot went by Harry Elephante from the mid-1980s until 1997, when he was reborn as Stomper, and an elephant patch rode the A's uniform sleeve from 1988 through the final Oakland season in 2024.
